Mother's Day was very different when it was first proposed in 1872. Julia Ward Howe, an American poet and social activist horrified by the senselessness of the Franco-Prussian War, called out to mothers everywhere to oppose violence on the second Sunday in June, a day she called "Mothers' Peace Day". Later, Anna Jarvis and her daughter campaigned to have the holiday declared official, and eventually succeeded in 1914.
