Wimbledon's first tournament was held in 1877. It was a fundraiser to help the club pay for new lawn equipment. Twenty-two players entered and 200 spectators attended what was the world's first organized tennis tournament.
Wimbledon today boasts a total of over 600 spots for competitors in its five main events. Annual attendance figures are now closer 500,000, at 35,500 spectators a day. Millions more follow the action on the court via TV, radio and the Internet.
