Their organization, the Ladies Professional Golf Association, is now the longest-standing pro sports association for women in the United States.

In its first season, the LPGA had 14 events-one of them a major tournament-and total prize money of $50,000. In 2006, the Tour's elite golfers compete in 35 events, four of them majors. This year, for the first time, the Tour's total prize money reached $50 million.
